In Mexico, Dia de los Muertos, or day of the dead, is a vibrant, colourful celebration of life. Mexicans believe this is the time those that have left us will come back to enjoy the best parts of life with us. An Ofrenda (altar) is decorated with pictures or photos of loved ones to honour their memory, candles are lit and favourite foods and drinks are left for those to enjoy in the afterlife, just as in mortal life. Cempasuchil (French marigold) petals are scattered to form a path for the souls to follow back to the Ofrenda and families and friends gather together to celebrate this special time. Each day has its own ritual and significance. 28th October is a day to remember the Lonely Souls and on this day, we light our first candle and leave a glass of water for those lonely souls.
All are welcome and we would love for you to bring along a photo or a drawing of your lost loved ones (pets count too) and place them on the Ofrenda in Brighton Open Market that is beautifully organised by our friends at Casa Azul mexican restaurant.
